I first noticed it in the checkout line at our neighborhood grocery stores — guys would dump four or five bottles of beer onto the belt, and I’d think, “Why not just buy a six-pack?”
Answer: Because there is no six-pack.
Above you see the bottles neatly lined up on the shelves — same goes for cans, by the way. These are 0.5 liter bottles (just under 17 fluid ounces), which is the standard size here, and you see a couple of cases up on top, but nothing in between. I need to check, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find that the case price is simply a multiple of the individual unit prices, in keeping with how most things seem to be priced here — not big believers in volume discounts, which, considering the substance in question, is probably wise.
